We flew from Louisville to Chicago to London to Nairobi. The many hours in the air gave us time to study Kiswahili and to read about Kenyan history and culture. English is the official language in Kenya, and Kiswahili is the national language. There are 42 different ethnic groups in Kenya, and the groups speak their own tribal languages. When asking Kenyans what languages they speak, a common reply is: “only 3: my mother tongue, Swahili and English” (their ability to speak only three languages greatly impresses these North American travelers).
