  55. Hello Nancy & Shelvis,

I know you guys have been in Kenya for 3 months now and this is the first you’ve heard from me since you left but it’s been crazy on my end but this isn’t about me. I just want to let you know how proud I am of the two of you and I pray that you will continue on your mission to which God has ordained far beyond this year long life changing experience in Kenya. I am sure that all aspects of your lives has been touched and when you get back (that’s if you decide to stay there after your year is up…lol j/k) to the states, you will come back with a new vigor. I know for a fact that you two are doing great things in the motherland so I’m not even worried. Just keep doing what your doing because you are blessed beyond measure. Continue to be blessed because you definitely are a blessing!!!

    Love Always,

    Leigh

  66. Guys, just wanted to drop you a note! Here in the States, I just finished watching the inauguration of President Obama. Regardless of anyone’s views on his policies, the fact that as a country we have arrived at this point is evidence of God’s might if only it says that anything is possible if you have faith. It is an amazing atmosphere in the office as so many people have gathered in conference rooms and auditoriums to watch the proceedings.

Just wanted to share what is going on stateside as you guys are out there in the world doing God’s business.

  67. My first visit in the New Year, and you two are as beautiful and vibrant as always…

I love you, dear friends, and wish endless happiness and God’s peace to you!

all my love across the miles,

    carts

My heart swells with pride. I’ll make sure the girls view the site this weekend! There will be smiles and smiles and smiles!
    Deepest Peace!
    Myron

  69. WOW! The pictures and captions of your various activities are like watching a documentary, but I happen to know the two leading characters. :) Thanks for sharing with us opportunities we may have never seen other than through the lens of God’s plan to bless us all with your work and commitment.

    Brenda Ward

  72. Hey you two! Many thoughts of you over the holidays…I’m just not often on the computer to let you know. I am so delighted you met Wangari. I don’t know if I told you this , but a long time ago…maybe 20 yrs….Tom and I went to a John Denver conference in Aspen on the problems of the environment. Wangari spoke of her work working with the women to plant trees in Kenya. As she spoke , a children’s book complete with images played through my mind’s eye…she was so eloquent and I was so moved. Inspired , I called her in Kenya with the notion of getting my passport and flying over to do the research. When I reached her, she discouraged us from traveling over because of the danger that was present with the government. She was clearly frightened that even having this conversation would be risky. How sweet a gift to see you being there and making your own difference. I celebrate your adventurous spirits and tender hearts. All is well here with a couple of inches of snow on the ground for our only real snow thus far. Savannah just got her first horse buddy…Oliver….and is cruising through 9th grade with flying colors. This is a blossoming year for her, oh my. Guy has gone through the HUGE process of applying to colleges and is awaiting results. He is 6’1″ and is on the final bit through highschool. I try to get to Cola. whenever I have a window to do so to see Grandaddy Guy. This last visit was wonderful in that he was in better shape mentally and physically than I’ve seen him in a long time. His passion for creating artwork is such an example to me and I marvel at his genius. I am taking an abstract painting class with my cousin Robbins in Asheville to see if I can tap in to some of that joy. well, hugs to you both… Libba

  73. Shelvis and Nancy,

Greetings from Louisiana. Just giving you a holla. Hope all is well in beautiful Kenya. Shaun sends his regards.

    Love,
    Eldon.

  74. Hey it’s your favorite web designer and social media guy checking in. Don’t know if you received my email about the video, but let me know what you need.

Miss you two like crazy, but thankful for your service. All is well here and the crew says hello. Anyway just stopping by. Thank you for sharing such a wonderful experience and I (we all do) look forward to seeing you soon!! :)

    Peace and Love,
    -Justin

  75. Hey Shelvis! I was thrilled to see on the Central PC website that you are in Kenya. To read your blog and see the photos with your amazing wife fills me with hope and peace. I am living vicariously through you and hope to reconnect upon your return to Atlanta. One of my dear friends was a YAV to Kenya in ’99-00 and it was life-changing for her. My life is full with two babies and part-time community organizing in Atl. I am busy trying to convince the GA legislature to raise the paultry minimum wage here. Not as glamorous as your undertakings but it scratches the itch to fight injustice these days. May peace be yours! Your sister in Christ, Kate

  76. Nacy and Shevlis,

My dear friends, what beautiful memories you are creating. Continue to just take it all in!!! I will email the two of you pictures from the wedding. The wedding was amazing. We relived it daily with vivid imagination.
    Best Wishes!

  77. Nancy and Shelvis – I just learned about you from Laura’s “25 Things About Me” on FaceBook…and she had your website with an invitation to visit. Laura and I became acquainted when my daughter Lisa married her brother Kent. I’m very impressed with your website and what you are doing in Kenya. A couple of years ago I became friends with a family from Burundi who are here as refugees, and it has been a very replenishing experience for me. They miss Africa so much and I know that all of them wish to return some day. Thank you for all the good that you do for humanity, both directly and indirectly by your example and energy. I know that you are blessed and enriching the lives of many.

    Nancy

  78. WHAT A DAY! SHEL-MAN! CELEBRATE!

  81. Hey, Shelvis. I didn’t even know you were married. Wow — I feel sorry for your wife. :) Neat ministry you are doing. I had the opportunity to go to Kenya in Nov 2007, in and around Nairobi. Our church will have like 3-4 trips to central Kenya this year. You guys take care and God bless.

  82. Oh, dear friends, this recent update is amazing. Certainly, HOPE LIVES, and some of your pictures are soooo beautiful and powerful.

I think of you daily and while I’m thankful daily for the powerful work you are doing “across the way,” I cannot wait to have your smiles back home with us!

  86. How are you Shelvis ? I am fine and wanted to know if you have a Facebook page yet. Rev Seawood (RCA President) was in Haiti and survived the quake. His church is Brighton Heights Reformed Church on Staten Island, NY. He and his church have Facebook pages.
Any plans on USA visit yet ? Or South Africa ?

  87. Nancy: Thank you so much for keeping me up to date on your travels and your work in Africa–it is such a wonderful education for me, and I share with you a love of Africa having visited there in 1983. I particularly loved the video of modern day African cities. You and Shelvis are such an inspiration! Happy Birthday Shelvis.

  90. Shelvis and Nancy,

What a blessing and honor it was to have you teaching our young people at Montreat in week two. I felt energized and excited in your presence and that current flowed easily to my youth group. It was beyond my pleasure meeting you (I was the happy water bowl holder from Asheville) and would be honored if you’d ever like to visit Asheville and stay in my home. Please never hesitate to contact me…your inspiration is INSPIRING!

    Amen,
    Molly
